We're always looking for ways to connect our learning inside the classroom to our experiences in the real world. Chicago and Oak Park offer a number of opportunities to get involved and practice your Spanish.
In Oak Park:
There is a Spanish Conversation Practice Group: Practice your Spanish skills with native speakers on the first and third Wednesdays of the month at the Oak Park Library. Native speaker John Cabal is the leader. Join in the conversation at 7 pm in the Small Meeting Room on the second floor of the library's main branch. Oak Park Public Library, 834 Lake. 383-8200. www.oppl.org
The Oak Park Public Library also offers free access to Mango, a language learning tool from their website. All you need is a library card. It's a great way to practice using the language in the privacy of your own home.
The Pervian Cultural Center is a cultural and educational organization whose main goal is to promote the different aspects of Peruvian and South American culture. The PCC mission places special emphasis on culture translated via history, folklore, visual arts, music, traditional and modern dance, and cuisine taking into account the European, African, Native Indian (Incas, and Asian heritage of Peru. They offer classes and workshops.
In the city:
Instituto Cervantes is a worldwide non-profit organization created by the Spanish government in 1991. It is the largest organization in the world concerned with the teaching of Spanish, and it maintains a presence in over twenty different countries throughout 54 centers devoted to the Spanish and Hispanic American culture and Spanish Language. They offer classes and activities related to Spanish language and Hispanic culture for adults and children.
The National Museum of Mexican Art (NMMA) is in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago. Admission is free and they have a wonderful permanent collection as well as several relevant temporary collections. The mission of the NMMA is to stimulate and preserve knowledge and appreciation of Mexican culture through sponsoring events and exhibitions that exemplify the rich variety of visual and performing arts in the Mexican culture; to develop, preserve, and conserve a significant permanent collection of Mexican art; to encourage the professional development of Mexican artists; and to offer arts education programs. Admission to the museum is always free and there are a number of excellent Mexican restaurants in the area surrounding the museum. The Pilsen neighborhood is also a wonderful area to explore. It has beautiful murals and great restaurants. I'm always happy to suggest some of my favorite places if you're looking for somewhere authentic to eat.
Europa Books at 832 North State Street in downtown Chicago is a book store focusing on foreign language books for adults and children. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful. They have American children's classics that have been translated as well as books originally in the other languages. They also have a number of games and work books for extra practice.
